Chargers vs. Chiefs: Score, results, highlights from Saturday night game in Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs sit alone atop the AFC West standings after a 30-13 win over the Chargers on Saturday night.

The Chiefs held just a four-point lead at halftime, but they scored on four straight second-half drives to pull away. The win moved Kansas City to 8-6 on the year, while Los Angeles fell to 7-7.

Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns, while Kareem Hunt rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown. Hunt also added 51 receiving yards and a score.

Philip Rivers tallied 227 passing yards and a touchdown but he also threw three interceptions in the losing effort. Melvin Gordon registered 169 total yards and a score for the Chargers.

Final score: Chiefs 30, Chargers 13

11:38 p.m.: The Chargers fail to score on the final drive and Kansas City comes away with the win.

11:36 p.m.: Kansas City runs it three times and fails to pick up a first down. It punts and the Chargers will take over at their 8 for what could be the game’s final drive.

11:32 p.m.: Turnover Chargers. Four straight Los Angeles drives have now ended with a turnover. Rivers attempts a pass to Travis Benjamin through a tight window and the ball is picked off by Marcus Peters. Los Angeles now has a chance to run out the clock leading 30-13.

11:26 p.m.: A Melvin Gordon run comes up just short on third down. The Chargers go for it again and hand it off to Gordon, who falls forward for 3 yards to keep Los Angeles’ drive alive.

11:22 p.m.: Touchdown Chiefs. Kansas City’s drive is extended on a third-down defensive pass interference penalty. Four plays later, Kareem Hunt punches it into the end zone from 5-yards out to give the Chiefs a 30-13 lead with 3:57 to play.

11:12 p.m.: Turnover Chargers. Los Angeles comes up just short on a third-and-8 and it elects to go for it on fourth down. Rivers drops back to pass on the play and the Chiefs bring pressure. Rivers lofts a throw to Antonio Gates and the ball is intercepted by Kansas City linebacker Justin Houston. Three straight Los Angeles drives have ended with a turnover. 

11:03 p.m.: Field goal Chiefs. The Chiefs move the chains once but Alex Smith’s third-down pass comes up short of the marker and Kansas City settles for a 51-yard field goal from Harrison Butker. The Chiefs now lead 23-13 with 10:59 to play.

10:55 p.m.: Turnover Chargers. Rivers completes a 7-yard pass to Austin Ekeler, moving the Chargers to their 41. But Ekeler looses the football and its recovered by Kansas City safety Ron Parker. Two straight Los Angeles drives have ended in turnovers.

End of third quarter: Chiefs 20, Chargers 13

10:49 p.m.: Field goal Chiefs. Kansas City fails to punch it in after the turnover as Alex Smith’s third-down pass to Kareem Hunt narrowly falls incomplete. Harrison Butker adds a short field to increase the Chiefs lead to 20-13 with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

10:43 p.m.: Turnover Chargers. Rivers attempts to force a deep ball into double-coverage on the second play of the possession and his pass is picked off by Marcus Peters, who returns it all the way to the LA 6. 

10:38 p.m.: Touchdown Kansas City. One possession after the Charges jump out in front, the Chiefs retake the lead. Alex Smith leads Kansas City on a 12-play, 69-yard drive that ends with a touchdown pass to Kareem Hunt to put the Chiefs ahead 17-13 with 2:07 to play in the quarter. Kansas City’s drive chewed up 7:13 of game action.

10:21 p.m.: Touchdown Chargers.  Rivers finds Antonio Gates in the end zone for a 10-yard score as the Chargers take a 13-10 lead with 9:20 to play in the quarter.

10:16 p.m.: Rivers checks down to Melvin Gordon across the middle on the first play of the drive. Gordon runs to the sideline and picks up 49 yards, moving the Chargers to the Kansas City 39.

10:12 p.m.: A third down pass from Alex Smith is batted down at the line of scrimmage and Kansas City’s drive ends in a punt.

10:09 p.m.:  We’re back for the second half in Kansas City. The Chiefs will start the period’s opening drive at their 20.

Halftime: Chiefs 10, Chargers 6 

9:54 p.m.: Rivers completes one pass but his Hail Mary into the end zone is batted down with time expiring and the Chiefs carry a four-point advantage into halftime.

9:49 p.m.: Kansas City drives into LA territory but comes away with no points just before halftime. The Chiefs move to the Chargers 34 but Alex Smith throws an incomplete pass on third down. Harrison Butker comes on to attempt a 52-yard field goal but he misses wide left. The Chargers take over at their 34 with 12 seconds to play.

9:34 p.m.: Touchdown Chargers. Los Angeles answers the Chiefs score with one of its own. The Chargers string together a 10-play, 75-yard drive that eats up 4:30 of game action and ends with a 2-yard touchdown run by Melvin Gordon. But Travis Coons misses the extra point and the Chargers now trails 10-6. Gordon has 72 total yards in the game.

9:17 p.m.: Touchdown Chiefs. Smith finds a wide open Tyreek Hill, who had run straight by his defender, for a 64-yard score to increase Kansas City’s lead to 10-0. The catch was Hill’s seventh touchdown of the season.

9:12 p.m.: The Chargers move the chains three times and advance near midfield. But Rivers is sacked for a 9-yard loss on first down and Los Angeles fails to recover. It punts and the Chiefs will take over at their 20.

End of first quarter: Chiefs 3, Chargers 0

8:59 p.m.: Field goal Chiefs. Kansas City fails to punch it in after the fourth-down conversion. Harrison Butker enters and kicks a 31-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

8:55 p.m.: The Chiefs go for it on a fourth-and-3 from the Chargers 47. On the play, Alex Smith finds Kareem Hunt, who picks up 21 yards to keep Kansas City’s drive alive. The Chiefs have it at the LA 14.

8:46 p.m. : The Chargers go three-and-out on their second possession of the game. Kansas avoids a disaster on the punt as the ball bounces off a blocker and is free. But, the Chiefs recover it and they’ll start their drive at their 6.

8:41 p.m.: Alex Smith throws an incomplete pass and the Chiefs follow with two short runs as they go three-and-out on their opening drive.

8:35 p.m.: The Chargers pick up a pair of first downs but their drive stalls when Philip Rivers is sacked on third down. They punt and Kansas City will take over at its 18.

8:31 p.m.: We’re underway in Kansas City. The Chiefs win the toss and defer. The Chargers will start the game’s opening drive on their 25 following a touchback. 

7:53 p.m.: The Chiefs and Chargers have both announced their inactives.
