Eagles' Jay Ajayi will play limited role in first game vs. Broncos

Eagles running back Jay Ajayi is expected to play a limited role in Sunday’s game against the Broncos after joining the team earlier this week, NFL.com reported.

Ajayi was traded from the Dolphins to the Eagles on Tuesday in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. Eagles coach Doug Pederson didn’t initially commit to playing him in the Week 9 matchup, though he appears to be willing to allot some time on the field for Ajayi, who learned a portion of the playbook this week.

“He’s done a nice job,” Pederson told reporters on Friday. “He’s a smart guy. He comes from an offense that uses very similar terminology, so he’s familiar with that. He’s picked it up, he’s had some extra meetings with [running backs coach] Duce [Staley] this week, so we’re trying to get him up to speed as fast as he can and we can and he’s done a nice job.”

Ajayi has been dealing with a sore knee all season but played in Miami’s Week 8 shutout loss to Baltimore, managing 51 yards on 23 carries and 26 yards on three receptions. The Pro Bowler has 138 carries for 465 yards through seven games this season.

The Eagles (7-1) host the Broncos (3-4) at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
