Hero World Challenge: Charley Hoffman extends lead; Tiger Woods rebounds from poor start

This week’s Hero World Challenge started out as Tiger Woods’ valiant return to golf, but it’s turned into the Charley Hoffman show.

Hoffman, who leads the field in birdies this week, birdied three of his last five holes to close out the third round with a five-shot lead at 14 under. He shot a 2-under 70 Saturday in blustery conditions.

Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth finished Round 3 tied for second at 9 under. Francesco Molinari was fourth at 8 under.

After two great rounds, Tiger Woods crashed back to earth with five bogeys and no birdies in his first 10 holes. The 14-time major champion still looked pain-free, but heavy winds stifled his rebuilt swing.

Woods ultimately birdied two of his last five holes to escape with a 3-over 75, dropping back to 4 under for the tournament.

“Everything I did right ended up in a bad spot, and everything I did wrong ended up really bad,” Woods said on Golf Channel after his round. “It was just one of those days. I’m going to keep fighting.”
