Martial embracing 'super-sub' mentality at Man Utd as goals flow again

Anthony Martial may want more starts at Manchester United but he is embracing the mentality of being a super-sub this season for the club.

The French forward has netted six times for the Red Devils this season, with four of those efforts coming from off the bench .

He has contributed to positive start to the 2017-18 campaign for United, with his last strike proving to be a match winner in a crucial clash with fellow Premier League title hopefuls Tottenham.

Martial’s contribution has drawn comparisons to Old Trafford legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer , who made his name as an impact player, and the 21-year-old is eager to make the most of any game time which comes his way.

He told MUTV on his role in 2017-18: “I think when I come on to the pitch as a sub, I’m hungry, desperate to play.

“I want to get some action, to score, to make some key passes, I want to give everything I can to help the team.”

Martial, who finished his debut campaign in 2015-16 with United as the club’s top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, found the target just eight times last season.

With that tally already well within reach, the France international believes is back to something approaching his best following a testing spell in 2016-17 which saw his value and ongoing presence at Old Trafford called into question .

He added, on the back of earning a recall to the Les Bleus fold : “At the moment, I’m happy, even if I could have done more, scored more goals and made more decisive passes. But I’m happy.

“I think the difference is that last year I didn’t have a good season but, for now, things are going pretty well. I’m achieving my objectives and I hope to score a lot more by the end of the season.

“I must continue to keep up good performances for my club and if I’ve got the chance to start over there [for France] I will do the best I can.”

Martial’s next opportunity to impress before linking up with his country could come against Chelsea on Sunday , with United eager to keep themselves in the title picture by securing a positive result against the defending champions.
