MLS transaction tracker: All of the latest trades and transfers across the league

With another MLS season in the books, teams are already preparing for 2018. Just hours after Toronto FC lifted the MLS Cup, the league’s trade window opened for a half-day in anticipation of the MLS expansion draft, leading to a flurry of early movement — and clubs have since continued to make waves with blockbuster deals.

NYCFC signs defender Cedric Hountondji

Jan. 11: New York City FC has signed defender Cedric Hountondji on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old center back comes to NYCFC from Gazelec Ajaccio in France and came up through the Rennes youth system. 

He is a Benin international, though he represented France at the youth level.

Revolution add French midfielder Zahibo

Jan. 11: The New England Revolution have signed French central midfielder Wilfried Zahibo, who most recently played for second-tier Spanish side Gimnastic de Tarragona.

The 24-year-old began his career with French club Ajaccio before stints in Spain with Fuenlabrada, Valencia and Gimnastic.

Jan. 9: The Colorado Rapids have signed U.S. national team left back Edgar Castillo on a one-year loan from Monterrey, with an option to buy following the 2018 campaign.

Castillo, 31, has spent his entire career in Liga MX, playing for Santos Laguna, Club America, Tigres, San Luis, Puebla, Club Tijuana, Atlas and Monterrey. He has earned 18 caps, most recently appearing for the U.S. in March 2016.

Jan. 9: Real Salt Lake has announced the signing of former Blackburn Rovers fullback Adam Henley. 

The 23-year-old joins RSL after spending six seasons with Blackburn, making 80 appearances combined in the Premier League and the Championship. Full story here .

Jan. 9: Former D.C. United midfielder Perry Kitchen has signed with the LA Galaxy after his rights were acquired from D.C. United.

The 25-year-old left D.C. United in 2015 and played in Europe with Scottish side Hearts and Danish club Randers before the Galaxy brought him back to MLS. Full story here . 

Minnesota signs Cameroon international

Jan. 9: Minnesota United has announced the signing of Cameroon international attacker Frantz Pangop, who joins from Union Douala.

The 24-year-old has earned two caps with Cameroon, and scored his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier against Algeria in October. 

Columbus adds Venezuelan midfielder

Jan. 9: The Columbus Crew have acquired midfielder Eduardo Sosa as a discovery signing from Venezuelan club Zamora.

Sosa, 21, has made 59 appearances (38 starts) for Zamora, scoring eight goals and adding six assists since his first-team debut in 2013. 

Rapids set to sign Wolves midfielder Price

Jan. 8: The Colorado Rapids are set to sign English midfielder Jack Price from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Championship side has confirmed .

The 25-year-old, who has played 115 matches in all competitions for Wolves since making his senior debut in 2013, is joining Colorado for an undisclosed fee.

DCU acquires Ousted from Whitecaps

Jan. 8: D.C. United has acquired goalkeeper David Ousted from the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2018 MLS draft. Full details here .

RSL signs Baird as homegrown

Jan. 5: Real Salt Lake has signed forward Corey Baird as a homegrown player after he spent four seasons at Stanford, winning three national championships. 

The 21-year-old has been capped by the U.S. at the U-20 and U-23 level. Baird notched 16 goals and 28 assists in his four years at Stanford while appearing in 77 total matches.

Jan. 5:  The New England Revolution have signed defender Gabriel Somi on a free transfer from Swedish side Ostersunds FK.

The 26-year-old received his first international call-up with Syria in October 2017.

RSL adds Spanish forward

Jan. 3: Real Salt Lake has signed Spanish forward Alfredo Ortuno with targeted allocation money.

The 26-year-old most recently played with Cadiz in the Segunda Division, scoring 17 goals in 40 appearances during the 2016-17 season.

LAFC acquires Feilhaber from SKC

Wake Forest duo ink homegrown deals

Jan. 3: Wake Forest products Kevin Politz and Brandon Servania have signed homegrown deals with the New York Red Bulls and FC Dallas, respectively.

A center back, Politz joins the Red Bulls after earning ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2017.

Servania, meanwhile, provided three goals and 11 assists out of midfield for the Demon Deacons this past fall.

FC Dallas lands Swiss defender

Jan 2: FC Dallas has signed veteran center back Reto Ziegler from Swiss side Luzern.

The 31-year-old journeyman, who has 34 caps for Switzerland, has previously played for clubs including Sassuolo, Juventus, Sampdoria, Hamburg, Fenerbahce, Wigan and Tottenham.

Dec. 30: Former Colorado Rapids midfielder Mohammed Saeid announced on social media that he has signed with Danish club Lyngby Boldklub .

The Rapids declined his contract option following the season. 

Earthquakes re-sign Hoesen

Dec. 29: The San Jose Earthquakes have acquired Danny Hoesen on a permanent transfer from Dutch side Gronigen and signed him using targeted allocation money.

The 26-year-old spent the 2017 season on loan with San Jose. He scored five goals and had five assists in 32 MLS appearances.

Orlando signs El-Munir, Villarreal

Dec. 27: Orlando City has acquired Libyan left back Mohamed El-Munir and former LA Galaxy midfielder-forward Jose Villarreal.

El-Munir joins Jason Kreis’ side from Serbian SuperLiga club FK Partizan Belgrade. Villarreal, meanwhile, arrives from the Galaxy in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2019 MLS draft.

Whitecaps move for Henry

Dec. 22: The Vancouver Whitecaps have landed defender Doneil Henry through MLS’ allocation process.

The 24-year-old comes to Vancouver after three years with West Ham in England, having moved there after starting his career with Toronto FC.

The defender has 22 caps with the Canadian national team.

Dec. 21: FC Dallas has landed Bulgarian defender Anton Nedyalkov.

The outside back comes from CKSA Sofia and has been capped five times by his country.  

Philadelphia re-signs three veterans

Dec. 20: The Philadelphia Union have signed defender Fabinho and midfielders Ilsinho and Fabian Herbers to new deals.

All three players had been out of contract since Nov. 1, with the club allowing Fabinho’s previous deal to expire while declining options for Ilsinho and Herbers.

Orlando adds Allen, Pinhp, re-signs Powers

Dec. 18: Orlando City has acquired defender R.J. Allen from New York City FC, signed NASL standout Stefano Pinho and inked midfielder Dillon Powers to a new deal.

The Lions sent a third-round pick in the 2018 draft to NYCFC in exchange for Allen, who had spent the past three seasons with the club. Pinho, meanwhile, arrives after most recently playing for NASL side Miami FC, having earned the league’s Golden Ball and Golden Boot honors each of the past two seasons.

Powers, who had been out of contract, returns for the 2018 campaign after joining Orlando in a midseason trade from the Colorado Rapids.

Galaxy acquire Bingham from ‘Quakes

Dec. 18: The LA Galaxy have acquired the rights to U.S. national team goalkeeper David Bingham from the San Jose Earthquakes.

San Jose received $100,000 in general allocation money and $100,000 in targeted allocation money in the deal, and could yield an additional $50,000 in GAM based on his 2018 performances. Full details here .

Dec. 15: The Vancouver Whitecaps have traded for LA Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

The Canadian club sent its natural second-round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft to the Galaxy in exchange for the goalkeeper.

Dec. 15: The Colorado Rapids selected Mike Grella and Tyrone Mears is headed to Minnesota United, with both players taken in stage 1 of the 2017 MLS re-entry draft. 

While the Rapids chose Grella, the midfielder was dealt almost immediately to the Columbus Crew, who sent a second-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft to Colorado in exchange for his services. .

Dec. 15: Sporting KC signed French midfielder Yohan Croizet in a transfer from Belgian side KV Mechelen.

The 25-year-old, who scored 12 goals in 71 appearances in the Beligian top flight over the last three seasons, inked a deal through 2020 with an option for the 2021 season.

Dec. 15: FC Dallas re-signed veteran defender Maynor Figueroa to a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old has spent the last two years with FCD after being acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rapids in January 2016.

LAFC adds Rossi as second DP

Dec. 14:  LAFC continued to shape its roster Thursday by signing Diego Rossi as the second youngest designated player in MLS history.

The MLS side, which is coached by former U.S. national team boss Bob Bradley and will begin play in 2018, reached an agreement with the 19-year-old forward’s current club Penarol of Uruguay’s Primera Division. The transfer will become official on Jan. 1.

Dec. 12: In the most interesting and biggest move of the half-day trade window, Sporting KC and Atlanta United worked out a four-player deal that included Kenwyne Jones. 

Jones announced his retirement in November , but was part of a deal on Sunday that saw him, along with goalkeeper Alexander Tambakis and a natural fourth-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft, dealt to Sporting Kansas City in exchange for midfielder Kevin Oliveira, defender Tyler Pasher and Sporting KC’s natural second-round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

Dec. 12: The Houston Dynamo traded for Arturo Alvarez on Sunday, sending the club’s natural second-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft to the Chicago Fire.

A Houston native who played his international soccer for El Salvador, his parents’ birth country, Alvarez is a 12-year MLS veteran who played 25 times for the Fire last season, making 13 starts. 

New York City FC trades Brillant to D.C. United

Dec. 12: D.C. United has picked up defender Frederic Brillant, sending $75,000 in general allocation money and a 2018 international roster spot to New York City FC in the deal. 

Since joining in 2016, Brillant has played 58 times for New York and was a regular in the heart of the club’s defense.

Dec. 12: Minnesota United head coach Adrian Heath will be joined at the club by his son, Harrison Heath, after the club pulled off a trade with Atlanta United to land the younger member of the Heath family.
