Nicholas Jerome Ackies, a freshman defensive lineman at Norfolk State, was shot and killed Friday night in Norfolk, the school announced Saturday, per The Virginian-Pilot.
Jaquan Anderson, a 22-year-old Norfolk State graduate who played for the football team when he was in college, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and using a gun in connection to Ackies’ death, according to the report. He is being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail.
“This is such a tragic situation. Our prayers are with Nick’s family during this very difficult time,” NSU athletics director Marty Miller said in a statement.
The Spartans’ homecoming game against Savannah State went on as scheduled Saturday, with a moment of silence of Ackies held before kickoff.
The shooting of Ackies is the second such tragedy to have struck the Norfolk State football team this season. In June, Dy-Shawn Simpkins, Jr., who was to be a promising freshman defensive back at the school this season, was shot and killed in New Jersey.
