CoCo Vandeweghe became the third American woman to reach the semifinals at the U.S. Open thanks to an upset win Wednesday, and ensured there will be a new No. 1 in the world rankings along the way.
Garbine Muguruza will top the WTA rankings for the first time on Monday after Vandeweghe dumped top seed Karolina Pliskova out in the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win.

Although Vandeweghe’s performances at regular WTA Tour events in 2017 have been largely underwhelming, she has frequently impressed on the biggest stages.
A semifinalist at the Australian Open in January, she also reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this year and has now equaled her best performance at a Slam.
The possibility of an All-American semifinals remains alive, as Vandeweghe will face the winner of the Madison Keys-Kaia Kanepi match for a shot to play either Venus Williams or Sloane Stephens in the final.
