UCF fans erect blllboard in Alabama suggesting home-and-home series

UCF is really trying to drive the point that it is the 2017 college football national champion. At least, its fans are.

Thirty-seven members of the Golden Knights’ fan base paid for and erected a billboard in Tuscaloosa this week — after the Tide’s 26-23 win against Georgia in the College Football Playoff championship game — congratulating Alabama on its CFP championship and suggesting a home-and-home series between the teams.

The image on the billboard was probably meant to poke the Tide a little as well:

To be fair, 13-0 UCF is the only undefeated team in 2017. And by beating an Auburn team that boasted wins over both Georgia and Alabama, the Knights raised questions as to whether Group of 5 teams should have a better chance at making the playoff. The fact that Alabama made it as a No. 4 seed without winning its division adds something to the discussion as well.

“We felt like this year’s team could run with anyone in the country, and the Peach Bowl win (over Auburn) proved that,” UCF fan Sean Barakett told ESPN, adding that he contributed $100 toward the campaign. “All we needed was a chance to play harder opponents.”

UCF, meanwhile, has put on a campaign for its 2017 championship: It put on a national title parade in Disney World during the playing of the CFP title game, paid its coaches championship bonuses and will hang up a championship banner. For what it’s worth, the state of Florida will also recognize the Knights as champions after Gov. Rick Scott declared them so.

The Knights might have a tougher time replicating that success in 2018; they lose several key players, and coach Scott Frost will no longer be on staff after returning to coach Nebraska.

UCF, it should be noted, is undefeated against Alabama. The Knights won the teams’ only matchup in 2000, beating the Tide 40-38.
