Watch: Chase Elliott gets revenge as Denny Hamlin wrecks out of championship contention

Chase Elliott got his revenge.

Denny Hamlin’s playoff hopes went up in smoke in Sunday’s Can-Am 500 on Lap 274 after Elliott made contact with Hamlin’s car just under seven laps earlier.

Elliott battered Hamlin’s bumper with 43 laps to go, likely causing a tire rub to Hamlin’s left-front. Hamlin slammed into the wall on on Lap 274, causing considerable damage to the No. 11, ending his day.

The drama comes just two weeks after Hamlin ended Elliott’s shot at a first win and a spot in the championship race. Elliott was in the lead with just under three laps remaining at Martinsville but Hamlin moved Elliott by hitting his back bumper in Turn 1, causing him to spin into the wall.

“It just proves to the people who thought I was a bad guy that he would do the exact same thing under the same circumstances,” Hamlin told NBC Sports after the wreck.

Elliott confronted Hamlin on the cool-down lap at Martinsville and the two were heated after the race. Elliott kept his cool at Texas but with his spot in the title race on the line, Elliott tagged Hamlin, then passed Matt Kenseth for the lead with just under 40 laps to go.

Elliott finished second Sunday, failing to advance to the title race but was asked about nudging Hamlin out of the way.

“I raced him how raced me. That’s about all I have to say,” Elliott told reporters.
